WILL THERE BE PEACE IN LANKA?
The government and LTTE have been sticking to a truce for the last 18 months, but many incidents have occurred since then which have been blamed on both the government and LTTE.

To add to this fragile situation are the issues arising between the President and the Prime minister. President Chandrika Kumaratunga, who is a political rival of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, has been critical of the government's plans to end the war that has killed 64,000, and accuses the government of conceding too much to the LTTE.

The president's spokesman Harim Peiris told a news conference that a breakdown in human rights, including a string of killings, in the north and east was a threat to the island's efforts to end two decades of civil war.

The deteriorating security situation comes at an otherwise optimistic time for the peace process, with the LTTE planning a response to a government proposal on power-sharing for the north and east. That is likely to lead to a resumption of peace talks that have been on hold since the LTTE suspended them in April.

What is your reaction to the current peace process between the government and the LTTE. Will there ever be a solution to end the war that has killed 64,000 people?

There will be no peace unless LTTE stops its targeted killing, assasination, child recruit and dicrimation againt minorities and other political parties.

Racism towards the Tamils which has always been the root of the problem.

I believe that there has been no change in the government's racism towards the Tamils which has always been the root of the problem. The only reason that Ranil has engaged in the peace process offered by the LTTE is because the government is in political and economic crisis, which in turn was due to the money that was spent on the war and the military failures that they incurred. The government needs this peace process because of this crisis, it is on the verge of economic collapse. There is no evidence that its leaders have changed their views about the safety and survival of the Tamils. Until the Sri Lankan state and the Sinhalese people give up their racism then I can't see any peace process finding a solution except for the solution of two independent states. In the end their racism will send them back to persecute the Tamils which will mean war. It is more a question then, will the international community finance the war as it has done in the past, or will it withdraw its financial support to the government and in doing so compel Sri Lanka to accept a peaceful resolution to the conflict? The 64,000 people you mention have an identity. They are virtually all Tamils, and they were killed by the government forces, its paramilitaries or its repressive anti-humanitarian actions. These are the effects of its racism against the Tamils. Unless there is a solution to the government's racism then the Tamils will never be able to enjoy peace.

I wish and pray that things to get better and make Srilanka proud of herself

It is high time for both President and the Prime Minister to join hands and work together leaving all differences behind thinking of the future of the country and the people. When you compare UAE and its development we are ashamed of ourselves. Having all the resources we are still unable to bring about a developed nation of the 21st century. Why are more Srilankans leaving the island and looking forward for more greener patures in other part of the world? All because our land is going from bad to worsem by giving heed to politics and not develpment. I had read many articles of Srilanka could brought to a stage of being a Hub in the Asian pacific, but we see it impossible because our rulers live their lives with all these differences and we will end up no where. So I wish and pray that things to get better and make Srilanka proud of herself giving out future generation the pride of being Srilankans.
