Latest Craze in Lanka- Applying for a UK Working Holidaymaker Visa
British High commission has recently included Sri Lanka in the list of countries that is eligible to apply for a UK Working Holidaymaker visa. There have been a large number of people queuing up outside the British high Commision in Kollupitiya daily.
The working holidaymaker scheme allows a person aged between 17 and 30 to come to the United Kingdom for an extended holiday for up to two years and may do any type of work full time or part time during their stay.
This is a worldwide scheme and there is no closing date for the scheme as such. They have also not imposed any quota for Sri Lankans wishing to enter UK on such visas.
Application forms and information about the scheme can be collected free of charge from the British High Commission or downloaded from the website www.ukvisas.gov.uk.
However applicants should make sure that they have original bank statements and/or savings books with them. Bank letters of balance alone will not suffice. Meanwhile the High Commission said the United Kingdom Working Holidaymaker visa applications would be dealt with on a telephone appointment system with immediate effect.
Appointments can be made by telephoning 011 233 5805. The line will be open from 8.00 a.m.-4.00 p.m. Monday to Thursday and from 8.00 a.m.-1.00 p.m. on Fridays. Applicants who arrive at the British High Commission without a prior appointment will not be seen.
The basic rules are as follows:
you are aged between 17 and 30 years
you are a commonwealth citizen, British Dependent Territories citizen or British Overseas citizen
you want to come to the UK for an extended holiday and intend to take employment
you are single or are married to a person who also qualifies as a working holidaymaker and you plan to take the working holiday together
you do not have any dependent children who are aged five years or over, or who will be five before you complete your holiday
your holiday and not work is the main reason for your visit
you can support and accommodate yourself without help from public funds
you do not have any commitments which require a regular salary
you can pay for your onward or return journey
you plan to leave the UK at the end of your holiday
